The new $69.7 million Southland Hospital was opened in late 2004, following two and a half years of design, construction, refurbishment, change management, transition and migration activity.
The new hospital was built directly in front of the original Southland Hospital buildings (commonly called Kew Hospital) that opened in 1937.
The hospital's redevelopment design work was completed by a joint architectural team of Jasmax (Auckland based) and MSJ (architects and health planners based in Sydney Australia). The construction team was headed by a joint venture between Fletcher Construction and Arrow International (Fletcher Arrow Joint Venture).
The redevelopment of the new secondary care base hospital for the Southland region consisted of 6 new inpatient wards, new emergency department, operating theatres, day surgery, endoscopy suite, outpatients, oncology and rehabilitation department along with a purpose-built inpatient mental health unit and a community services base.
The main hospital building encompasses 20,200m2 of floor area and includes 700 rooms, all housed under 11,400 sq m of roof.
