POLICY OF CARE:
The Southern District Health Board undertakes:
1. that staff will provide a quality service as governed by contemporary standards, to all of our customers and patients.
2. to respect, maintain dignity and consideration to all individuals.
3. to provide clear understandable information to patients, and where requested or necessary, their next of kin, about the treatment options in order to obtain informed consent for treatments or procedures.
4. to obtain written informed consent for specific invasive treatment or any procedures before they are carried out unless prevented by circumstances affecting the immediate wellbeing of the patient. Such consent will be obtained from the patient. This includes consent before the patient is involved in any research project or part of any teaching programme. Southern District Health Board is a teaching organisation and has training doctors, student nurses and allied health students working in clinical areas. You can decline having a student involved in your care at your discretion.
5. to support the right of patients to withdraw from any treatment, investigation, research, teaching programme or institution at any time. This decision will not alter any care or service given to the patient.
6. to minimise barriers to access safe, appropriate care and to promote independence for all patients.
7. to support where appropriate full participation including decision making by patients managing their wellness or illness.
8. to support patient's rights regarding access to personal health care information held by Southern District Health Board.
9. privacy and confidentiality will be ensured at all times unless the law requires Southern District Health Board to act otherwise.
10. to accommodate the need to have the support of whanau, relatives or friends by encouraging, where appropriate, the presence of chosen people, unless doing so would negatively affect the health care delivered to any individual or any other patients.
11. that staff will facilitate a timely and fair means of handling any difficult situations or complaints.
12. to support methods of obtaining feedback from patients and the public on matters related to the provision of services.
13. to provide care and service delivery in an appropriate environment utilising professional knowledge and skills.
