Quality and Humanity in Health

Volunteers are an important workforce within Southern DHB and the wider Southland community and are vital to the ongoing success of  Meals on Wheels and the St John Friends of the Emergency Department. Many of our volunteers are keen to contribute back to the community and find that these programmes offer a rewarding and enjoyable opportunity to support Southlanders. We welcome you to join our team of volunteers.

FRIENDS OF THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT:

The St John Friends of the Emergency Department (FEDs) are volunteers that provide non-medical support for patients and families in the Emergency Department. Emergency Departments are busy places where staff are focused on providing medical attention. Patients and families are often needing a hand to hold, a cup of tea or someone to talk to - that's where the St John FEDs come in to play. For more information about becoming a St John Friend of the Emergency Department at Southland Hospital, please visit St John website, telephone 0800 780 780 or email enquiries@stjohn.org.nz

MEALS ON WHEELS:

The Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver close to 60,000 hot meals to members of the Southland community every year. This service could not operate without the volunteer drivers and administrators. Meals on Wheels is a much needed part of our community which helps people maintain their independence in their own home. For more information about becoming a meals on wheels volunteer, please contact Joyce Martin, Meals on Wheels, Southern DHB, Telephone: 03 214 7222 or email: joyce.martin@sdhb.govt.nz

SOUTHLAND HOSPITAL VOLUNTEERS:

The Southland Hospital Volunteers run the hospital gift shop, visit patients in the wards with the shop trolley, tend to flowers in the ward, chat to patients in need of company and generally help people needing directions in the hospital corridors. The volunteers generously donate any profits from the gift shop back into the organisation to help purchase items for use in patient areas and staff rooms. For more information, please contact Lynda Lindsay, Administration Officer Southland Hospital, Telephone: 03 214 5719 or email: lynda.lindsay@sdhb.govt.nz
