Quality and Humanity in Health

Pharmacies and pharmacists are primary health care providers who provide a range of health and medication advice. They can assist you with over-the-counter medicines as well as dispensing medications that you have been prescribed by another health professional (for example, your GP, midwife, dentist).

Pharmacists provide important information and advice around how to take prescription and non-prescription medications correctly to ensure they are effective for you.

Pharmacies receive funding from the Southern DHB to help pay for the cost of pharmaceuticals (drugs) and also to help cover distribution and dispensing of drugs. This funding applies to the list of government funded pharmaceuticals, that have been decided upon by Pharmac (learn more about Pharmac).

The amount you pay when you pick up a prescription depends on whether the medication is fully subsidised or partly subsidised and whether you hold a community services card, or a high health user card. More information regarding prescription fees can be found on the Ministry of Health website or via this Ministry webpage link.
