Quality and Humanity in Health

The Southern DHB region has a Maori population representing approximately 11% of the total region's population. Invercargill City has the largest population of Maori within this district and Wakatipu has the smallest.

Ngai Tahu are Tangata Whenua for the region, with four Runanga throughout the district:

  • Waihopai, Invercargill
  • Awarua, Bluff
  • Hokonui, Gore
  • Oraka-Aparima, Riverton

The Southern DHB Board has Maori representation included with two appointed Maori Board Members.

IWI GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE:

Southern DHB has developed a strong partnering relationship with Manawhenua Hauora ki Murihiku, with a Relationship Agreement having been developed and both parties working in the spirit of this agreement through the Iwi Governance Committee.

This governance level committee comprises local Ngai Tahu Runanga representation together with Southern DHB Board Members. The Iwi Governance Committee focuses on the strategic, governance level direction for Maori Health issues in the district. The parties to the Iwi Governance Committee commit to the following goals under the relationship agreement:

  • To create and foster a high trust environment which allows the parties to work together while growing within their own tikanga (customs, obligations and conditions) and pursuing their own interests and priorities.
  • To provide a framework for the parties and Government to work together towards improving health outcomes by efficient use of resources and effective representation.
  • To ensure relevant priorities for Maori health are identified and targeted by Southern DHB.

MANAGEMENT ADVISORY GROUP - MAORI HEALTH:

In addition an operational level group, the Management Advisory Group - Maori Health has been established.  This Advisory Group is chaired by the Chief Executive Officer, Southern DHB, who was also responsible for appointing members to the Group after due consultation with the Iwi Governance Committee.  

The Members are

The functions of the Management Advisory Group - Maori Health are: 

  • To give advice to the Iwi Governance Committee on the health needs of the Maori population in the Southern DHB region. 
  • To ensure that the priorities for Maori health are reflected in the annual plans of Southern DHB and appropriate processes including consultation are followed in the preparation for planning. 
  • To ensure Southern DHB services are accessible and appropriate for Maori. 
  • To achieve the Maori health objectives across the Southern DHB region as directed by the Iwi Governance Committee.
