Well Child/Tamariki Ora Services refers to the health screening, surveillance, education and support services offered free to all New Zealand children from birth to age 5 years and their families/whanau. These services are provided to support parents to ensure their child grows and develops to their full potential.
There are 12 health checks offered through the national Well Child Schedule, which are provided by registered nurses and other health professionals with training in child health. The health checks include areas such as growth, weight, vision, hearing, dental health and other cognitive, emotional and physical indicators.

From birth to four-to-six weeks, there are four Well Child health checks provided by your Midwife or GP.

From four-to-six weeks to three years, there are a further seven core Well Child health checks available from your Well Child Provider at important stages in your child's life.

The B4 School Check is a free check for four year olds and carried out by Child Health Nurses and Vision Hearing Technicians.
The check is to promote health and wellbeing in preschool children and to identify behavioural, developmental or other health/social concerns that may adversely affect the child's ability to learn in the school environment. >> More information.

Southland Well Child Providers:
The Well Child/Tamariki Ora Framework and Schedule has important linkages with lead maternity carers, primary health care providers, immunisation and vision and hearing screening. Accordingly, there is considerable team work amongst Southland health professionals who provide Well Child services, in order to support our community's children and families to grow and develop to their fullest potential.

If a health concern is identified during any of the Well Child checks, the Well Child provider is able to refer parents to the support service or specialist health provider that their child needs.
