Quality and Humanity in Health

Medical

The Southland province offers medical professionals clinical variety and quality teaching in a relaxed, friendly team environment coupled with a superb outdoors lifestyle, featuring New Zealand's premier scenic destinations and outdoors leisure pursuits.

As the base hospital for a geographically spread region, Southland Hospital sees a wide variety of cases across all levels of acuity. This makes it an excellent training and development ground for junior medical staff and younger consultants who are commencing their specialist careers. Our more experienced clinical staff enjoy the variety of clinical work and teaching responsibilities which are professionally stimulating and rewarding.

Southland Hospital is large enough to offer an impressive range of state-of-the art diagnostic tools and the range of support services you need, yet it is still small enough to offer a personal and friendly team atmosphere with a more informal approach to consultant/junior relationships than you will find in a larger hospital. We employ approximately 100 medical staff to work across our clinical services.

University Teaching Hospital:

University of Otago

Southland Hospital is a teaching hospital for the University of Otago's Dunedin School of Medicine, with a number of senior clinical lecturers on our hospital staff. An associate dean is based at Southland Hospital to coordinate teaching activities with clinical staff and to offer support  to medical students during their placement in Southland.

Southern DHB and the Otago University have a long history of co-operation with medical students spending time on rotation at Southland Hospital over the last 20 years. Placements in Southland occur for 4th, 5th and 6th year students in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, paediatrics and obstetrics. Southland Hospital is well equipped with video-conferencing facilitates so that students can link into Otago teaching sessions in addition to their Southland based teaching programme.

House Officers:

Our house officers are supported and encouraged by clinical colleagues and given great opportunities to learn a variety of practical procedures, with the support of registrars and specialists. Our senior staff and management work hard to provide a quality teaching environment to maximise house officer learning opportunities during their time working with us.  The surgical division is keen to ensure active clinical involvement for junior doctors in training during their specialty rotations. For those doctors with a particular interest in progressing their career in surgery, we are often able to accommodate requests to join in with additional cases.  Our house officers enjoy a strong sense of comradeship and our team of clinicians, with the support of our medical officers' unit, will make you feel supported and welcomed during your time with us. >>More on 1st Year House Officers.

Registrars:

Registrars have the opportunity to advance their specialist training with supportive senior colleagues, whilst working through basic and advanced accredited college training programmes.  Registrars working towards selection onto a training programme will gain valuable provincial hospital teaching and quality clinical experience while working alongside senior national leaders during their employment.  Our consultants are highly visible and accessible both in supporting your clinical work, as well as providing mentoring in respect to career path development. Southland Hospital medical staff have very good links with the medical royal colleges and a number of our staff are involved on national examination boards for various colleges, or have held official leadership positions in specialty associations or medical royal colleges.

In both cases, there are also opportunities to combine public and private work in Invercargill with Southern Cross Hospitals.

Medical officers who are looking for a unique resort town experience will find a great opportunity to combine their broad based clinical skills with an outdoors adventure lifestyle when working at Queenstown's Lakes District Hospital.

As part of our clinical governance structure, divisional leadership teams with a medical Divisional Director, Nursing Director and Divisional Manager work in partnership to manage the services within their portfolio. This is supported by a Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer and Chief Operating Officer management team at the executive level.

Hospital wide there are good opportunities for clinical and management dialogue with a more informal approach to these relationships than found in larger institutes, enabling greater collaboration and idea sharing.

Good liaison and relationship building takes place with the primary sector, including the GP Liaison position at Southern DHB and a regular doctors' wine and cheese evening with GPs and specialists joining for an informal social evening. Grand rounds and other education sessions are also open to the primary colleagues.
