Southland Hospital is a 181-bed, University teaching facility situated in Invercargill City, New Zealand. Opened in 2004 following an extensive campus re-development, Southland Hospital is well equipped for its size and features digital radiology, MRI and an electronic patient management system. As the base hospital for the region, serving a population of 107,000, our Medical, Nursing and Allied Health professionals enjoy a broad and interesting range of cases, which makes for an excellent training ground for students and staff keen to gain a range of clinical experience. Southland Hospital offers a number of accredited teaching programmes and has a strong organisational commitment to teaching, ongoing education and professional development across all disciplines.

LAKES DISTRICT HOSPITAL, QUEENSTOWN, NEW ZEALAND:

Lakes District Hospital is a 22-bed facility situated in Queenstown, New Zealand and services a permanent population of approximately 23,000 in the Wakatipu basin and a regular influx of tourists during summer and winter months (up to 1 million visitors annually). Lakes District Hospital is 2.5 hours drive from Southland Base Hospital and 45 minutes by helicopter. Within the hospital, there is a multidisciplinary team structure amongst our Medical Officers, Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health staff. The team has very good linkages with the local GPs and aged care residential facility attached to the hospital. As a busy resort town, Lakes District Hospital sees up to 400 presentations per month with up to 50 transfers to Southland Hospital (secondary base hospital) or Dunedin Hospital (tertiary provider). The hospital is located in a unique setting, with a growing and aging population as well as its distance from base hospitals providing additional challenges for health service delivery. Staff working at Lakes District Hospital enjoy a fun, collegial work environment that is set against a stunning scenic backdrop with the Remarkables Mountains and Lake Wakatipu in close proximity.

Southern DHB Mental Health Services provide a range of community based and inpatient mental health services from multi-disciplinary teams located in Invercargill (Southland Hospital campus), Gore (Gore Hospital campus) and Queenstown (across the road from Lakes District Hospital). Our 180 FTE multi-disciplinary staff include Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Nurses, Counsellors, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and Community Support Workers. Staff enjoy being a part of a dynamic, innovative and forward thinking service, where there is flexibility, opportunity and a real commitment to ongoing education and workforce development.
