Clinical Psychologist – Intellectual Disability Service

Wakari Hospital, Dunedin, New Zealand

A Clinical Psychologist is needed as part of a Multidisciplinary team within the Intellectual Disability Service at Wakari Hospital, Dunedin.  This service comprises a 13 bed medium secure inpatient unit and a 4 bed intensive rehabilitation inpatient cottage.  Clients are between the ages of 17 and 65 years.  Some may have been charged with or alleged to have committed a criminal offence, others have a known or suspected mental illness and may require assessment and treatment, or they may present with behaviours which are unable to be managed safely in the community due to a high level of serious persistence or risk to themselves or others.

This 40 hour a week role will require good time management skills to enable your assessment, planning, and delivery of effective clinical psychology interventions for patients.  You will also be actively involved in individual and group therapy’s.  Ensuring the continued wellbeing of your clients will see you liaising extensively with other clinical psychologists within the organisation.

You will have a sound knowledge and some post graduate working experience of clinical psychology assessment and interventions, with relevance to intellectual disability as well as mental health.  Your communication skills will be of the highest standard allowing you to relate to the clients, their families, and other health professionals while providing clear, appropriate communication when presenting and discussing clinical information.  You should also be open to different ways of working and thinking outside the box in order to achieve positive outcomes.  The clinical psychologist role is an integral and valued member of a multidisciplinary team providing patient-centred interventions.

To be considered for this role you should be registered (or eligible for registration) with the NZ Psychologists Board, and an annual practising certificate would be a requirement prior to commencement.
