Consultant Gastroenterologist
Dunedin/Invercargill

Negotiable

If you are a Consultant Gastroenterologist interested in a short term or permanent role this is certainly your next stop. We have a fantastic opportunity for a specialist Gastroenterologist position within a progressive department that is affiliated with the University of Otago. Our Gastroenterology service welcomes applications for the position starting as soon as possible, there is also room for flexibility with us to negotiate the hours of work and length of employment with the successful applicant if you wish to. This role is based in Dunedin, however, consideration would be given to a candidate who wishes to be based in Invercargill, though this would certainly involve travel to Dunedin.

With some of New Zealand’s most famous scenery and holiday spots on our doorstep (Queenstown, Wanaka, Milford Sound, Stewart Island, to name but a few) our region offers affordable living, great schools, a relaxed way of life with no traffic jams in sight.

Southern DHB offers a comprehensive range of Gastroenterology services in both of our main hospitals, located in Dunedin and Invercargill, as well as outpatient clinics in other areas of the district. Dunedin is a vibrant University town and a great place to live and work. Dunedin Hospital has 350 beds and provides care for a population of approximately 180,000.  Southland Hospital, in Invercargill has 180 beds and provides care for a population of approximately 100,000.  Invercargill is situated at the base of the South Island and the people are renowned for their warmth and hospitality, there is space in abundance and you are surrounded by national parks.  The two main hospitals in Southern DHB provide care for the population of the whole of the lower South Island.

In this role you will participate in a 1:4 on-call roster and provide a full range of Gastroenterology services alongside an enthusiastic group of colleagues.  Planning is currently underway to re-develop facilities and expand the department so there will be opportunities to contribute to this development. There are also unlimited possibilities for laboratory and clinical based research and there is plenty of scope for collaboration with like-minded researchers. To be successful in this role you’ll need to have enthusiasm for teaching and be a team player with a commitment to improving and developing service delivery quality.

Southern DHB has all major specialties, including interventional radiology, tertiary level care in neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery and the region is well served by an excellent helicopter retrieval service.

Appointed specialists will possess FRACP or an equivalent qualification. Trainees within a few months of completing FRACP training are welcome to express an interest. ERCP experience is desirable, but not essential.

If you see your future working with us as part of a specialist team in a teaching environment then please get in touch.
