You will have a keen interest in the health and wellbeing of the children living within our community and in return you will work alongside a dedicated group of Paediatricians, Paediatric Registrars and other Child Health professionals.
You will be exposed to a wide and varied pathology and supported by strong links with the tertiary providers throughout New Zealand. The role is split and is to provide a comprehensive general Paediatric service and a level two Neonatal service supporting up to 1600 deliveries per annum.
Southland Hospital Children’s Health Service is part of the Southern District Health Board District Service and has a close working relationship with colleagues at Dunedin Hospital and in particular the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which is the closest tertiary provider and referral centre. The Paediatric Department is actively involved in teaching. It is affiliated to the Dunedin School of Medicine and actively supports 5th and 6th year students within the department, with Paediatricians providing Senior Lecturer roles to the School of Medicine
House Officers will usually work in our Childrens Health service for 6 months and so will also spend time during the training year working in other specialities such as:
- General Surgery
- Orthopaedic Surgery
- General Medicine
- AT&R (Assessment, treatment & rehabilitation)
- O&G (there is a separate application process for this role)
- ED (there is a separate application process for this role)
Regardless of where you will find yourself working, you will be a member of a close knit team, you will have excellent access to your Registrar & Consultant, and unrivalled opportunities to experience many of the varied presentations to the hospital. You will be exposed to a number of medical situations that will equip you well for future training Registrar roles.
You will be have a number of opportunities to access regular teaching, both formal and at the bed side as well as the ability to attend some clinics.

It is expected that you will have a minimum of 1 - 2 years post graduate medical experience. If you are unable to commence November 2017, please state in your application the date you will be available from.
