Description

Prescribing Optometrists

Dunedin Hospital

  • Dual Employment Opportunity
  • Permanent, 1.0 FTE (40 hours) -  combination of Southern DHB (0.5FTE)  and a Community Optometry Practice  (0.5FTE)

Ophthalmology Services at Southern DHB; Dunedin Hospital along with the community practices of Milburn & Neill and Fairmaid Chance & Crawford are pleased to offer this new and beneficial opportunity of shared employment, by establishing the dual employment of optometrists to work part time as an in-house optometrist with the Southern DHB and part time in a community practice (Milburn & Neill or Fairmaid Chance & Crawford).

The Southern DHB service embraces a multi-disciplinary team based approach to provide optimal patient care alongside ophthalmologists, orthoptists, nurses and ophthalmic photographers and presents an opportunity to further enhance your current skills and knowledge within a unique learning environment. This is predominantly working with paediatric and elderly patients and includes being involved in the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of people who have more acute eye pathologies.

The Community practice position offers exposure to full-scope optometry including ophthalmic dispensing.  This will suit a well –rounded clinician competent in diagnosis and management skills and who can prescribe and dispense with accuracy and precision.  Full mentoring by friendly and experienced colleagues is a given; both practices are of long standing with historic emphasis on contact lens fittings.

These combined roles present an opportunity to further enhance your current skills and knowledge within a unique learning environment that incorporates elective treatment options, acute service provision, departmental teaching sessions and professional development.

The person we are looking for will demonstrate a drive for achieving excellence through the application of evidence-based clinical practice and expertise and will thrive working in busy environments.

They will be working autonomously, as well as collaborating and consulting with the other members of the ophthalmology and community practice teams to fulfil our patient focused, team oriented approach.

Current registration and practising certificate as a New Zealand Optometrist and Dispensing Optician is essential.
