Consultant Paediatrician with an interest in Community Paediatrics
This role is split: 0.5 FTE general paediatrics and 0.5 FTE community paediatrics.
Southland Hospital provides healthcare to a population of 115,000 and is the base hospital for a wide geographical area which provides scope for an extensive variety of interesting general paediatric work.
There are opportunities for the right candidate, who will be self-directed, innovative, and able to work independently, to take a leading role in community paediatrics as well as maintaining and enhancing our general paediatric service in the hospital working within an experienced team.
Our modern hospital was rebuilt 2004, and offers up to date technology in PACS digital radiology, MRI, CT and iSOFT patient management system (iPM).
This is an exciting opportunity for either an experienced or newly qualified Consultant to develop your career in a department capably supported by experienced senior consultants, registrars and senior house officers alongside an experienced, stable nursing staff. You will join the dedicated team of three other General Paediatricians with sub-speciality interests and share a 1:4 on call roster.
You will provide a comprehensive general Paediatric service to the hospital including working in a level two Neonatal service supporting up to 1400 deliveries per annum. You will participate in providing outreach clinics to rural areas and you will be exposed to a wide and varied pathology and supported by strong links with the tertiary providers throughout New Zealand.
Additionally you will act as a liaison for SDHB child health services with other services and multi-sector groups working with children and youth focussing on national, regional and local population based child and young people’s health issues where the emphasis is on maintaining wellness, ensuring equity and improving health outcomes.
Southland Hospital Children’s Health Service is part of the Southern District Health Board District Service and has a close working relationship with colleagues at Dunedin Hospital and in particular the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which is the closest tertiary provider and referral centre.
The Paediatric Department is actively involved in teaching. It is affiliated to the Dunedin School of Medicine and actively supports 5th and 6th year students within the department, with some of our Paediatricians providing Senior Lecturer roles to the School of Medicine.
Located in the lower South Island, Southland is a desirable destination if you are looking for an outdoors lifestyle that offers a wide range of sporting and recreational activities. It is home to two of New Zealand’s national parks offering opportunities for tramping, internationally acclaimed fishing, hunting, climbing and a wide range of outdoor pursuits. Queenstown (a major tourist destination for the region) is a comfortable 2 hour drive from Invercargill. There is an abundance of choice for skiing with four ski fields within easy driving distance. Invercargill is a family friendly city with excellent educational facilities, fabulous restaurants and a tight knit and well supported community.
Applicants must have completed their specialist training and be eligible for vocational registration with Medical Council of New Zealand. The position offers an attractive remuneration package, relocation assistance and CME allowance.
