Neonatal Intensive Care

Introduction

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), is part of the Children's Health Service.  It provides level two neonatal intensive and special care to preterm and unwell term babies from 30 weeks gestation and stabilises babies less than 30 weeks, prior to transfer to a tertiary hospital (highly specialised), predominantly Dunedin NICU.

To effect the safe transition from NICU to home, a homecare nursing service is also provided.

All Children's Health Services practice the principles of family centred care.
