Maternity Services

Introduction

There are four primary birthing units operating in Otago in addition to Dunedin Hospital, which provides the full range of primary, secondary and tertiary maternity services for the Otago area:

Queen Mary Maternity Centre at Dunedin Hospital is the only birthing unit in Dunedin and provides the full range of primary, secondary and tertiary maternity services for the Otago area and tertiary (highly specialised) services to Southern District Health Board. The unit offers antenatal, delivery and postnatal services, a Lactation Consultancy Service and evening ante natal classes. The emphasis is on supporting families, education and self care.

Charlotte Jean Hospital, Alexandra is a primary birthing unit staffed by nurses and midwives who provide round the clock care for women during and post giving birth. Qualified staff will assist your LMC carer during labour and birth, with private rooms and birthing pool available. Post-delivery the unit offers a home-like nurturing environment for women and their partners/whanau, and staff offer help with caring for your new baby and breastfeeding. Women may also choose to transfer to Charlotte Jean Hospital after birthing elsewhere. BFHI accredited. For more information visit www.charlottejean.co.nz

Clutha Health First Maternity Centre provides antenatal, delivery and postnatal services.  They run six antenatal classes a year and have a lactation consultant available upon referral. The unit has three beds plus a birthing suite with access to a birthing pool.  Partner boarding is encouraged.  Women not delivering at the unit can return there for immediate postnatal care. BFHI and DAA accredited.

Maniototo Hospital Maternity Centre provides antenatal and post natal support services. Information as well as free pregnancy tests are available from the centre, which is also used for antenatal check ups.  There are two maternity beds and a birthing room available to support emergency deliveries, however planned deliveries are not possible at the centre.

Oamaru Maternity Centre specialises in birth support services. The unit is staffed by six midwives and nurses who cover post natal care. There are up to two birthing rooms, including a birthing pool and up to four postnatal rooms.  An on-call service operates at night if the centre is not occupied. The centre has two antenatal clinic rooms and an obstetrician holds an obstetric clinic once a month in the hospital’s outpatient’s department. They are a breastfeeding friendly accredited (BFHI) unit, offer lactation support services and run breastfeeding class for women every 6-8 weeks.
