Paediatrics Surgical Services

Introduction

This is a South Island Wide service which is known as the South Island Childhood Network Paediatric Surgery.

The Referral and Transport guidelines aim to ensure that children's surgery and care is undertaken as close to home as possible, and that support, advice, and assistance is provided to the Child Health Services of provincial hospitals.

Christchurch Paediatric Surgical Centre serves the whole South Island, with the exception of Nelson / Marlborough neonates who are transferred to Wellington for initial care, with subsequent care provided by the Christchurch service.

Christchurch paediatric surgeons provide:

  • clinics and day surgery sessions at Blenheim, Nelson, Greymouth, Timaru, Dunedin, and Invercargill public hospitals, on a regular basis according to each centre's needs.
  • 24 hour telephone advice to general surgeons and paediatricians in paediatric surgical emergencies (each centre is encouraged to have at least one surgeon who can take primary responsibility in these cases).
  • up-skill courses for general surgeons in the management of paediatric surgery.

The four Paediatric Surgical Centres (Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch) have agreed on the management of specific complex cases where one service is able to offer sub-specialisation to patients from across the country e.g., Christchurch provides support to other centres for long gap oesophageal atresia and complex laparoscopic surgery, but receives assistance for Nuss procedures and complex hepato-billary conditions
