Nursing

Whether it has been five years or twenty-five years since working, nursing needs you!

In Southland, Southern DHB's Competence Assessment Programme (Return to Nursing) offers ‘out of practice' nurses the opportunity to update clinical skills and boost their confidence to return to work in a clinical setting.

(Please note : In Otago the Competence Assessment Programme is run by the Otago Polytechnic. Otago based nurses should click here for be directed to information on the Otago Polytechnic Programme.)

Since the introduction of the Health Practitioners Competency Assurance Act (2003), registered and enrolled nurses who have been out of practice for 5 years or more are now required to show the New Zealand Nursing Council evidence of competence and professional development, in order to obtain their practising certificate and re-enter the workforce.

Southern DHB's Competence Assessment programme is an approved competency based programme from the New Zealand Nursing Council.

The programme can be completed on either a full time (5 days a week for 5 weeks) or part time basis (up to three months).  It is based on Nursing Council's requirements of no less than 200 hours theory and practice and written assessment against the nurse's scope of practice.

Nurses are matched to a senior nurse mentor for their clinical placements, which can be in a variety of areas at Southland Hospital.  Participants might also complete their clinical requirements at the Southland Hospice or community placements with appropriate support.

The Return to Nursing Programme was first trialled by the Southland DHB in 2002 and the initiative has proven to be a success with most of those who have attended the programmes having successfully returned to nursing work - as full time, part time or casual nurses.
