The Board is responsible for overall governance of Southern DHB and is accountable to the Minister of Health. District Health Boards usually have 11 Board Members - 7 members are elected by the community during a three year election cycle and the Minister of Health appoints the remaining 4 members to the Board. The Minister also appoints the Chair and Deputy Chair positions. However due to the amalgamation of the Southland DHB and Otago DHB Boards on 1 May 2010, the Southern DHB Board consists of all 20 elected and appointed Board members of both the former Otago DHB and Southland DHBs. This is until elections that will coincide with the local body elections towards the end of this year. The Southern DHB geographical area is divided into two constituencies, existing of the former Southland DHB and Otago DHB boundaries. After the DHB elections, the Southern DHB Board will have four elected representatives from Otago and three from the Southland region as well as four Ministerial appointments. Southern DHB also has a Crown Monitor, appointed by the Minister of Health, to support Southern DHB with additional financial expertise.
