The following health strategies, plans, reviews and networks relate to local health issues for the Otago and Southland region.
These plans were developed under the former Southland and Otago DHBs, which merged on 1 May 2010 to create the new Southern DHB.
The Southern DHB will build on the work and the strategic direction set by the Otago and Southland DHBs, as outlined in the below strategies.
| Review of Aged Related Residential Care in the Otago Southland Region |
This September 2007 report reviews Aged Related Residential Care (ARRC) capacity in the Southern DHB and Southland DHB districts from a regional perspective. It was commissioned jointly by the two DHBs and was carried out by the Regional Otago Southland Planning and Funding team within the DHBs. >> Download this review document.

| Southern Cancer Network |
The Southern Cancer Network was established in August 2007 and is one of four regional cancer networks that have been set up in New Zealand to work with cancer continuum of care stakeholders to facilitate a number of initiatives in the Cancer Control Strategy and Action Plan 2005-2010. The Southern Cancer Network encompasses the five South Island District Health Boards - including Southern DHB - and has a mandate to strongly influence the direction of cancer service provision in the South Island region, consistent with the Cancer Control Strategy Action plan. | Child and Youth Health Strategic Plan 2006-2012 |
This strategic plan was approved by the Southland DHB Board in March 2007. In approving the plan, the Board acknowledged the extensive input of stakeholders via the consultation process, which resulted in a thorough and considered strategic document which reflects the community's views and priorities. >> Download this strategy.

This implementation plan was published in April 2006 and signified Southland DHB's ongoing commitment to implementing the New Zealand Disability Strategy (NZDS 2001) and creating an ‘inclusive society'. | Maternity Strategic Plan 2005-2010 |
This strategic plan was published in July 2005 and prepared by maternity researcher Dr Christine Hendry. The plan details how the DHB will improve health outcomes for mothers and babies and the initiatives developed to be implemented over the next 5-10 years. The aim of the strategy is to ensure the provision of a sustainable and clinically appropriate model of maternity services in Southland that meets community needs. >> Download this strategy.

This strategy was published in December 2004 and details how Southland DHB plans reduce the incidence and impact of this priority health issue for the Southland population.
