Located in Dunedin, the University of Otago's Faculty of Medicine is the oldest in New Zealand and was founded in 1874. The Dunedin School of Medicine provides research-based undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of international standard in medicine and related sciences. All Otago University Medical Students undertake their second and third years in Dunedin before choosing between the Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington campuses for their clinical training. Hospital training from the Dunedin School of Medicine is provided in Dunedin Hospital and in Southland Hospital, Invercargill. Over 700 undergraduate medical students are training in Dunedin and Southland at any time. The Dunedin School of Medicine staff teach in all years of the course. There is a very strong, active research base in Dunedin of international standard at the Otago School of Medical Sciences and the Dunedin School of Medicine, which has six departments - Preventive and Social Medicine, General Practice and Rural Health, Pathology, Womens and Children's Health, Medical and Surgical Sciences and Psychological Medicine. Over the years, some very important international discoveries in health research have been made in Dunedin. A full clinical curriculum for 4th, 5th and 6th year students at the Dunedin School of Medicine is delivered in the Southern Region, with placements at Dunedin and Southland hospitals and in the Community. The Dunedin School of Medicine runs the only routine rural placement in the country for all 5th year students in general practices and rural hospitals throughout Otago and Southland. Placements in Southland occur for 4th, 5th and 6th year medical students in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, paediatrics and obstetrics. The Dunedin School of Medicine also runs an Active post-graduate programme with postgraduate courses and significant numbers of post-graduate research students. The Dunedin School of Medicine and Dunedin and Southland Hospitals share many staff. Some Staff hold joint University and DHB appointments, and many staff both in Dunedin and Southland are appointed as Clinical Lecturers and Senior Lecturers, assisiting with the education of both undergraduate and post graduate students. There is also an Associate Dean based at Southland Hospital to support students on placement. |
Southern DHB's Southland Hospital, Dunedin Hospital and the University of Otago have a long history of co-operation and collaboration. Dunedin was the site of the country's first Medical School, and medical undergraduate students have trained in Dunedin at Dunedin hospital since the Founding of the Medical School in 1875. Medical students from the Dunedin school of Medicine have spent time on rotation at Southland Hospital over the last 20 years.
