Staff and patients at Dunedin Hospital celebrated the launch of the Countdown Kids 11th Hospital Appeal last week.
The Appeal helps children like Latiya Haua Corkill-Smith by raising money for much needed medical equipment for 11 children’s wards across the country, including Dunedin Hospital Rotary Children’s Ward. Thousands of Kiwi kids visit hospital wards each year, and this year’s Appeal aims to raise more than $1 million to help those in need.
Latiya spent the first month of her life in the neonatal unit at Dunedin Hospital after suffering from severe neonatal hypoglycaemia which caused global development delay and lead onto a seizure disorder. She is a shy but cheeky three year old who loves nothing more than being outside and enjoying nature.
Latiya faces many challenges, she is non-verbal and is not walking. No day is easy for her, or her family, and she has been in and out of Dunedin Hospital on a regular basis since she was born.
Latiya’s mum Terina says, “I’m really grateful to the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal whose funding has purchased equipment that helps Latiya. As a parent of a child who benefits from this equipment, I know and appreciate how much difference it makes.”
Southern DHB’s Nurse Manger for Women’s and Children’s Inpatient Services Otago, Pam Markby, says the service is grateful to again have been chosen as a recipient of the fundraising venture.
“The Countdown team is amazing - they have shown such a commitment to helping children who use our hospital services. The funds raised by this important appeal allows us to purchase items that make the hospital stay of children and their families as comfortable as possible, as well as ensuring we have additional up to date equipment to help aid their recovery and development. This has made a real difference to children like Latiya by improving their stay while in hospital,” said Pam.
Launching at Dunedin Hospital on 3 August, Countdown stores will be working alongside their local children’s wards to host fundraising activities. From selling cheese rolls to hosting cake stalls, hundreds of Countdown and hospital ward staff will be rallying the Dunedin community to support the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal.
Celebrating its 11th anniversary, the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal has raised $1,022,601 for Dunedin Hospital since it began through country-wide fundraising activities.
