Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal Launch at Southland Hospital

Staff and patients at Southland Hospital celebrated the launch of the Countdown Kids 11th Hospital Appeal last week.

The Appeal helps children like Alyssa Orr by raising money for much needed medical equipment for 11 children’s wards across the country, including Southland Hospital Children’s Ward.  Thousands of Kiwi kids visit hospital wards each year, and this year’s Appeal aims to raise more than $1 million to help those in need.

Alyssa has been a regular patient at Southland Hospital’s Children's Ward with respiratory illnesses since she was a baby. Alyssa is a fun-loving friendly seven year old who has two big sisters Zara and Tessa. She enjoys jazz and playing netball, touch rugby and hockey.

In 2015 Alyssa had a life threatening episode of asthma and ended up in the Critical Care Unit. She was transferred back to the children’s ward to Room 5, a room that thanks to Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal has been created into a high dependency room where children are cared for in a child-friendly environment.

“We’re very grateful to Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal for the funding they have provided which has enabled the hospital to buy equipment that helps Alyssa recover, and for the care given to her by the staff at Southland Hospital, especially asthma nurse Annie Smith and paediatrician Dr Shaw,” said Alyssa’s parents Jeff and Julz.

Southern DHB’s Nurse Manager; Women's and Children's Services: Older Persons Health, Clinical Support and Community Directorates (Southland) Cherie Meulenbroek, says the service is delighted that Southland has once again been chosen as a recipient of the fundraising venture.

“The donations have made such a difference to the care given to children in the hospital. We’ve been able to purchase a range of fantastic equipment using the funds raised which helps children like Alyssa by improving their stay in hospital,” said Cherie.

Launching at Southland Hospital on 4 August, Countdown stores will be working alongside their local children’s wards to host fundraising activities.  From selling cheese rolls to hosting cake stalls, hundreds of Countdown and hospital ward staff will be rallying the Southland community to support the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal.

Celebrating its 11th anniversary, the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal has raised $636,000 for Southland since it began through country-wide fundraising activities.
