Senior House Officers PGY 2 +    Dunedin Hospital

How about a change in hospital for 2020/2021?  Don’t want to be working somewhere too big or too small?  Want to have exposure to tertiary level cases?  Love to teach?  Want to work with Specialists who are also research leaders in their field of interest?  If you answer yes to any of the above, then Dunedin is the place for you to be!

We are calling for registrations of interest from those who will be post graduate year 2 and above.  Whether you have decided on your career and determined that you need more subspecialty experience to get where you are going, or, if you are still undecided but want exposure to more generalist roles, we have what you need.

With the following quarterly runs available, House Officers are asked to advise of the runs they are interested in working in:

  • ED (3 or 6 month runs available)
  • General Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Cardiology
  • Orthopaedics
  • Older Peoples Health
  • ENT
  • Medical Oncology
  • Ophthalmology / Neurology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Rehabilitation
  • Haematology
  • Respiratory
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Urology
  • Various psychiatry runs
  • Renal
  • And of course…. Rotator roles

6 month runs are also available in the following areas:

  • O&G
  • Paediatrics

House Officers at Dunedin Hospital are managed by the RMO Unit, and are also welcomed to join the RMO Committee (which consists of their peers). As a House Officer, you will receive 2 hours of protected teaching a week - featuring both internal and external, visiting speakers - in addition to being offered other education opportunities such as journal clubs and x-ray meetings. The RMO Unit encourages all House Officers to participate with their own input, or by holding their own teaching sessions. 


Candidates are required to have at least two years postgraduate experience and be eligible for, or already hold, registration in New Zealand with Medical Council of NZ.

  • You must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand, and be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.  You can check your eligibility for registration by visiting the Council’s website at
