Trainee Anaesthetic Technicians

The Southern District Health Board Anaesthetic service is looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals to join our team as Trainee Anaesthetic Technicians on a 3 year fixed-term basis (approximate).


About the Role

This trainee role offers a pathway to an Anaesthetic Technician qualification while working full-time within our multi-disciplinary service.  On the job training is provided by fully trained staff and incorporates competency, experience and task based components.  You’ll also be required to complete distance learning for theory and practical components.


Our busy Anaesthetic Departments provides services to the operating theatres and for several other departments within the Hospitals.  Anaesthetic Technicians are an integral part of the departments and make a valued contribution towards the safe delivery of anaesthesia, and the perioperative patient experience, for a large range of procedures.  We are dedicated to providing quality patient care and provide our staff with continuous quality improvement and professional development opportunities. 


These are fixed-term trainee positions, and while we can’t guarantee you a permanent position once your training has finished with us, Anaesthetic Technicians are currently in hot demand throughout the country, so this provides an excellent opportunity to gain a sought after qualification while getting paid to do so!

You’ll need to be eligible for entry into the Diploma in Applied Science (Anaesthetic Technology) run by AUT and be a NZ permanent resident or citizen.  Please visit and for details on the training program and please check your eligibility to be accepted into the Diploma in Applied Science (Anaesthetic Technology) run by AUT before applying for one of these roles.  As part of our shortlisting, priority will be given to applicants who have a background in health sciences, particularly biophysics and human anatomy and physiology, and relevant clinical experience.
