Mental Health Professional – Specialist Addiction Services

Do you have a positive/can do outlook, a genuine interest and previous experience working with clients with substance use issues?  Then come and join our collaborative and friendly team at the Specialist Addiction Service (SAS), based in the Community Mental health team in Balclutha. There is an expectation of driving approximately weekly to Dunedin to access support and training from the Addiction service based at Wakari Hospital.

About the Role

As part of this dedicated team you’ll have your own case load of clients on Opioid Substitution Treatment (OST) meaning your days will be busy and varied. OST Case Management will be approximately ½ of your case load. The other ½ will be 1-1 assessment and counselling for clients with other substance use problems. You’ll have regular contact with other DHB Health Services, and NGO’s, so you must be an excellent communicator who is adept at interacting with your clients, colleagues and external organisations, always striving to ensure the best results.

About You

You will bring to this role a solid understanding of addiction issues and experience in working with clients with co-existing-problems (CEP) and you’ll be able to demonstrate strength in screening, assessment, brief intervention, and clear decision making skills. Desirable skills and experience relate to mental health and physical health assessment.

In addition to the addiction specific role, this role includes participation in the after-hours mental health on-call roster. Experience working in a mental health setting is preferred. It is expected that you will work towards becoming a Duly Authorised Officer of the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) act (1992).  A Registered Nurse is preferred for this position but applications form other suitably qualified and health professionals will be considered.

You will be a Registered Mental Health Professional (Registered Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, or DAPAANZ registered clinician. It is desirable that you hold relevant post graduate qualifications. You will also require a full NZ drivers licence.
