Welcome to Southern DHB, more specifically, Southland Hospital. Our secondary Hospital proudly provides top-quality healthcare to a population of 105,000 in the lower South Island; this provides us with some unique challenges, but also ensures that there is an enormous scope for the variety in the work available to a talented professional like you. Being at the bottom of the country you would probably expect us to have a small, ancient facilities, but we are happy to brag that Southland Hospital, rebuilt in 2004, is a state-of-the-art facility that provides exceptional healthcare.
We have approximately 1400 births per annum at Southland Hospital, and a further 200 in the surrounding rural areas. Our department consists of a modern 14 room maternity unit with 4 birthing rooms, a level two 5 cot neonatal unit and a dedicated Women’s Health Unit. The service is supported by a team of experienced midwives, obstetrics, gynaecology and colposcopy nurses.
This role is primarily based in Invercargill with some travel across the Southern District expected. You will also participate in the on call roster, routine obstetrics, routine gynaecology and colposcopy clinics including some outreach clinics.
Our department is affiliated to the Dunedin School of Medicine University of Otago and has a strong focus on educational development with daily obstetric handover and weekly teaching sessions and we have recently achieved a four year accreditation for O&G training by RANZCOG.
You can be happy to take either a part time (32 hours per week) through to full time (40 hours per week) option with us at this time. You must have completed, or be about to complete their specialist training and be eligible for vocational registration with Medical Council of New Zealand.
You’ll know Invercargill is the southern-most city in the South Island, but did you know we’re renowned for our friendly and unhurried pace of life, and our strong sense of community? It is just like the good old days in New Zealand down here. Some people think its cold down here, but the weather is actually better than Dunedin or Wellington, and if you want to be close to Queenstown and Central Otago we are the closest Hospital currently offering O & G services.
