Description

Senior Dental Officer

Southland Hospital

Permanent, Part time

Southern DHB

Welcome to Southern DHB. Our DHB covers the largest geographical catchment of all the DHB’s in New Zealand; Southland Hospital is our DHB’s Secondary Hospital proudly providing top-quality healthcare to a population of 105,000 in the lower South Island.

Our dental team delivered 5300 hospital outpatient visits and 830 appointments in our Community Oral Health Service (COHS) clinics in 2019, plus managing ED presentations and dental treatment under GA.

Being at the bottom of the country you might expect us to have small, outdated facilities; but we are proud of our modern hospital, newly constructed in 2004. Two of our dental clinics were renovated this year with new equipment, one was renovated in 2018, and plans are underway to renovate the final clinic in the near future.

About the Role

Hospital dentistry is rewarding because of the patient group that we see. The variety is what keeps it interesting: we see patients from a wide age range, with a wide variety of dental problems, and provide a wide range of treatment. You will at times attend ED presentations and receive referrals from throughout the DHB and also from community oral health services. Some treatment will be provided at Southland Hospital, and some in Community Oral Health Service (COHS) clinics throughout the district.

In this 0.6FTE (24 hour role) you will join a team of 7 Dentists, who provide both inpatient and outpatient services and have an equal share in the on-call roster (1:6 weekends). We see ourselves as a young and dynamic department, and we are all New Zealand trained dentists.  We have four chairs and have Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery support provided by the Faculty of Dentistry & Dunedin Hospital. We are a very well equipped with an electronic records system (Titanium), digital x-rays, capnography monitoring for IV sedation, digital nitrous oxide machines, electric micromotors, rotary NiTi endodontics, and a soft tissue laser.

About You

This role is for an experienced practitioner. Ideally, you will be a Special Needs Dentist or someone with experience treating special needs and paediatric patients. You will be comfortable treating patients under G.A. As an outstanding team player, you will have the energy and drive to make a positive difference with both patients and colleagues alike. You will need to be someone who is an excellent communicator and values their patient’s culture and whanau and is enthusiastic about teaching and passing on your knowledge to junior members of staff.  You will be someone who sees hospital dentistry/public healthcare as a long-term fit.

In addition to enjoying a diverse workload and an exceptional quality of life, you can look forward to a highly competitive pay rate and a culture where staff are included, valued and respected for their expertise.  To be eligible for the position, you must be registered with the Dental Council of New Zealand and have a current Annual Practising Certificate.
