Rural Hospital Medicine - Medical Officer (fixed term)

Queenstown’s Lakes District Hospital is recruiting a Senior Registrar Rural Hospital Medicine who is currently nearing their completion of training, or an ED trainee with a genuine interest in rural practice for a fixed term role from August 2021 until the end of January 2022.
At Lakes District Hospital you will form part of an energetic team of 10 Rural Hospital Specialists/ Medical Officers. You will have the opportunity to provide care to a diverse set of patients. We see around 13 500 Emergency presentations per year, these include trauma plus an interesting spectrum of medical, surgical and paediatric pathology.
The role will include clinical and non-clinical duties. You will be working across our newly renovated Emergency department, our small outpatient department, and our providing secondary level care in our 10 bed inpatient ward. We have an on-site a primary maternity unit (five beds), and at times you will be required to assist in neonatal and peri-partum emergencies. There is a co-located BUPA rest home is. As a rural hospital we are often confronted with complex logistical decisions around patient transfer, patient stabilization and staging before moving patients on to base hospitals.
This vacancy is best suited to someone currently undertaking their Rural Hospital Medicine training with Royal College New Zealand College of General Practitioners. Generalist medical care is the mainstay of our practice at Lakes Hospital therefore previous experience in Emergency Medicine, ICU/Anaesthetics, Orthopaedics, General medicine and Paediatrics is desirable. Ideally you will have encountered working in isolation, as overnight on-call backup may be up to 30 minutes away. To be considered for this role you must be currently registered with the New Zealand Medical Council.
