Working within the health environment offers a fast paced, challenging and rewarding workload and it is a particularly interesting time to join us here at Southern DHB.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and associated Regulations place specific requirements on businesses to manage the risks of its operation. As a PCBU, building owner and health care provider Southern DHB needs to ensure that it is not putting workers, patients and visitors in harm’s way.  We are working to ensure that our management arrangements are fit for purpose, and in order so that the organisation meets its statutory obligations. We are seeking a results focused professional with the desire to deliver best practice to help us achieve this.

The Environmental Co-ordinator will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of Health and Safety as it relates to the management of asbestos and other environmental contaminants within the Building and Property Services portfolio.

Reporting to the Construction Health and Safety Manager, and working closely with the wider Building and Property team, key accountabilities of this role will include, but are not limited to:

·        Contribute to the development of management arrangements for asbestos and other environmental contaminants.

·        Carry-out asbestos related professional and technical duties, such as; arranging surveys, managing asbestos related work, developing and implementing procedures, undertaking technical research, etc.  Reviewing surveys and testing data and developing safe systems of work.

·        Manage and maintain Southern DHB asbestos records, information and register

·        Assist in the delivery of asbestos awareness training

·        Drive continual improvement and best practice in the management of environmental contaminants.

To be considered for this role you will have at least two years’ experience with environmental contaminations investigations and / or remediation, and, most importantly, an exceptional understanding of both current and future regulatory and legislative requirements.  A background in the asbestos assessor/surveying sphere would be an advantage.

You will have the ability to recognise what you don’t know, and an initiative that will see you go away and research these topics and identify best practice requirements.   This will be complemented by your commitment to your own personal and professional development.

To succeed in this role you will have the innate ability to foster productive relationships with a broad range of people across the DHB.  Integral to this will be your ability to influence and continually grow positive behaviours.  As the work environment is a busy open-plan office of 19 people, a sense of humour is essential.
