Description

Rural Medicine Specialist

Queenstown, Lakes District Hospital

1 FTE, permanent

  • Dream location
  • Your chance – don’t miss it

Are you looking for a chance to mix some business with pleasure? A touch of soaking up the sun, and when the snow arrives, hitting the slopes?  Queenstown’s Lakes District Hospital has a total of 1.5 FTE available for two Rural Medicine Specialists to join a team of enthusiastic rural generalists who provide emergency and in-patient care to our community. These are permanent positions based in Queenstown, well known for being the Adventure Capital of the World.

Queenstown Lakes District has a permanent, rapidly growing, population of around 30000 and a large visitor population. Last year Lakes District Hospital saw 10,500 patients in the Emergency Department and admitted 1000 patients to our general ward. Those who require urgent specialist care are transferred by road or air to Invercargill or Dunedin. There is local access to 24 hour laboratory services, x-ray and point of care ultrasound, and in 2018/19 the size of the Emergency Department will be doubled and a CT scanner added.

Our workload is especially varied, with the level of trauma you would expect from our young and adventurous population, balanced with in-patient care which is mostly general medicine, paediatrics and palliative care. We also provide emergency back-up for the Lakes primary birthing unit and Community Mental Health Team. Our SMOs provide 24 hour cover through rostered shifts, working alone overnight with on-call help available. We are a teaching centre for rural hospital and emergency medicine registrars and rural immersion undergraduate medical students.

You will be a Fellow of the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine (FDRHM), or a Fellow of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (FACEM) with a plan to dual-qualify as FDRHM. Ideally, you'll have a postgraduate qualification in Point of Care Ultrasound. You'll be comfortable working flexibly with our team of excellent nurses and keen to help us develop services as we grow.

Closing date: Tuesday 5 June 2018
