ABC Smoking Cessation Approach

The New Zealand Smoking Cessation Guidelines use 'ABC' to help guide health professionals to:

  • Ask all patients if they smoke
  • Provide Brief advice to quit to all smokers
  • Offer Cessation support

The ABC approach integrates cessation advice and treatment into personal health care to generate 'more quit attempts that are supported with effective treatments, more often'. The purpose of the ABC approach is to:

  • Trigger more quit attempts
  • Improve the likelihood of success for each attempt by using treatment.

The health target "Better Help for Smokers to Quit" uses the ABC approach to provide more opportunities for more smokers to make successful quit attempts, and focuses on implementing a population health approach in standard clinical practice.
