New Zealand Mental Health Awareness Week 2012 - Take Notice

 

October 10th is World Mental Health Day.  Established by the World Federation for Mental Health, and recognised as an international observance day by the United Nations, World Mental Health Day sees thousands of people around the world advocating for improved mental health and joining in public events aimed at improving wellbeing.

In New Zealand we celebrate World Mental Health Day as part of Mental Health Awareness Week from the 8th - 14th October.  The New Zealand theme is co-ordinated by the Mental Health Foundation, who this year have chosen "Take Notice".  Full information on the theme and supporting resources are available on the Mental Health Foundation website.

Locally, a number of organisations are celebrating Mental Health Awareness Week this year.  Details of some events are posted below - more will be available on this page closer to the time.

Wednesday 3 October

OPEN FORUM: As a lead in for the week the Future Directions Mental Health and Addictions Network will host their annual Open Forum in Invercargill on the 3rd of October. Saturday 6 October

RIDE THE LAKE for Mental Health awareness day is held on October the 6th starting at 10am from McNaulty Inlet Cromwell. The event can be done as an individual or in teams of up to four. The sections range from 16km to 25km. All proceeds from the event go towards a Mental Health project in Central Otago. Price to enter is $25 for individual and $20 for team members. Monday 8 - Friday 12 October

INFORMATION DISPLAY: Supporting Families Wakatipu will have a Mental Health Awareness Week display at the Queenstown Public Library. Contact Jo Moore, email: jo@sfsouthland.org.nz.

8th, 9th & 11th October

Terry Lynch will be hosting a 15 minute interview with John Kirwan on his Radio Southland (96.4 FM) Consumer focused show called 'Calm Minds'. The interview will be played at the following times:

  • Tuesday 9 October @ 12.10pm
  • Thursday 11 October @ 5.10pm

 

 

Monday 8 October

WALK IN THE PARK: Sport Southland are hosting two walks at Queens Park in Invercargill to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week. They leave from the Feldwick Gates, Gala Street on Monday 8 October at 5.15pm and on Tuesday 9 October at 12 noon. 9 October - 4 November The Kaleidoscope Art Exhibition

Tuesday 9 October

OPEN DAY: Happiness House in Queenstown are hosting a day of activities including a Sing Star competition, sausage sizzle and Push Play activities. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Wednesday 10 October

OPEN DAY: The SouthernDHB Mental Health and Addiction Service are holding an Open Day from 11.30am-1pm at their Invercargill offices. Everyone in the community is invited to attend and activities will include tours of the service, information displays and resources, giveaways and a free BBQ. SPRING OUTING: Otago Mental Health Support Trust will be holding a Spring Outing at the Botanic Gardens at 10am on Wednesday 10th October with some nibbles and spend time enjoying the spring flowers. All people are welcome. Please RSVP to 477 3598.

INFORMATION DISPLAY: A Mental Health Awareness Week information display will be held by local Mental Health and Addiction providers at the Frankton New World Supermarket in Queenstown from 11am-2pm.

THE GREAT A&P SHOW: at Artsenta. Fun & games, competitions, fruit & vegetables, music & dance, food & drink. Event open to the mental health community.  Tickets available at no cost. Contact 03 477 9566 for more information.  

EDUCATION SESSION: The SouthernDHB Mental Health and Addiction Inservice Presentation is "How do Children Develop Pro-Social Behaviour?". WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY is on Wednesday the 10th of October. This years International Theme is 'Depression: A Global Crisis'. For more information go to www.wfmh.org.

PAMPERING, LUNCH & GAMES: PACT invite you to the Eastside Baptist Church (Invercargill) for some pampering and a light lunch, followed by fun sports games. 10am-2pm.  

Thursday 11 October

MENTAL HEALTH PROMOTION: An interactive Mental Health promotion will be held in Arrowtown on the Green in Buckingham Street from 12pm-2pm. Activites will include information displays and yoga - everyone welcome.

Friday 12 October

OPEN DAY: The SouthernDHB Day Activity Centres will be hosting Open Days at their three Centres in Invercargill (Rata House and 494D) and Gore (Welcome In). Saturday 13th October: RIDE OUT OF THE BLUE

A group of Queenstown young people are planning a three week bicycle ride from Bluff to Cape Reinga leaving on Saturday the 13th of October. The ride aims to promote awareness of mental health to reduce the stigma surrounding suicide and depression. Organisers plan to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation programme 'Mindfulness in Schools'. For more information email rideoutoftheblue2012@gmail.com.
